The cheapest armor, at 2 G.P., padded armor is Type I protection that absorbs 1 point of damage per attack with no Dexterity penalty.
Under the optional wear rules it suffers badly from fire: 20 or more points of fire damage in one round gives a 75% chance it must be replaced and a 50% chance it needs repair, and a single attack of 20+ points gives 40% and 75%. Repairs cost 20-50% of the replacement price. Spell casters other than paladins cannot wear armor.
