Chain mail is Type IV armor, absorbing 4 points of damage per attack at the cost of -1 on Dexterity saves. It costs 200+ G.P., and it is rare because the skill to make it belongs to elves and dwarves alone.
It counts as 10 lb. of encumbrance, about half its real weight. Wet weather for two days or more gives it a 10% chance of needing replacement and 50% of needing repair under the optional wear rules. An alchemist enchanting a full metal suit with orichalc needs 7 ingots per +1. Spell casters other than paladins cannot wear it.
