Mediterranea, painted for this archiveDraconea
Place, Region
The 'land of dragons', the untamed interior of western Mediterranea, empty of humans but full of goblins, ogres, Great Dragons, firedrakes, mastodons, lions and tigers. Ruined Atlantean and Hesperian outposts dot it, and shipwrecks on its coasts are common.
From the book
Draconea, the land of dragons, is the loose name for the untamed middle of the continent. The name once covered most of Mediterranea, but human expansion has pushed it back in recent centuries. It still reaches from the Mediterranean coast to the River Oceanus and fills the interior of the west: the Black Forest and the Oceanus lie north, the Oceanus also marks the west, Aragana is to the southwest, the sea and Broceliande to the south, Targrim, Otesium and Saturnia to the southeast, and Vir to the east.
No humans live here except a few nomads and reckless adventurers. Goblins, ogres and their kin are fairly common, Great Dragons are said to haunt the forests, and firedrakes are thought to shelter in the volcanoes near Broceliande and Aragana. Mastodons, lions and Mediterranean tigers, almost extinct elsewhere, survive in this last stretch of primeval wild.
The land has no ruling culture, government or population, and only danger-seekers come. Atlanteans once hunted trophies on its shores, but so many never returned that the custom died. Unpredictable weather, worst on the northern coasts, causes frequent shipwrecks, and survivors often meet a worse death ashore than the sea would have given them. Ruined forts, trading posts and small colonies of the First Age Atlanteans, and perhaps of the Hesperian Amazons, lie within its borders, most now taken over by evil non-humans; only the Citadel of Tok is said to still hold humans.
