Mercury stands for reversal and change, and is the alchemist's great spoiler. One dram, mixed with a bat's wing, black cat's hair and a ground-up fly, turns any potion into one of cursed or reversed effect, and tests have only an even chance of detecting it. Added to aging ingredients it makes a Potion of Longevity that takes 10 years off the drinker.
It also goes into slow poison, the dusts of blindness, confusion, appearance and water evaporation, and alchahest. Its essence, Variable Mercury or the Philosopher's Stone, turns 100 lbs. of molten lead or mercury into pure gold.
