An alchemist shapes a clay golem beside copper furnaces and a homunculus in a jar, with whales drifting past a sunken city beyond.

Create Homonculous

Alchemy, Homonculus

An artificial creature grown for two months in a sealed copper vat around a clay model, taking its traits from the animal ingredients used; results are rolled on the life-form tables.

Also called Homonculus, Homunculus

From the book

The recipe is a fluid ounce of aqua vitae, a fluid ounce of the creator's own blood, and 8 drams of the chosen animal ingredients. The creator designs its form, with a description and rough sketch; the ingredients set its abilities and attributes (an ogre's Strength, a panther's Dexterity, human Intelligence). Its level, hit points and attributes average those of the creatures used.

A clay model of the body is sculpted in two weeks (one with a sculptor), set in a large copper vat with the ingredients, sealed with bee's wax and left in a cool, dark place. After two months (halved with a wizard or sorcerer) the seal is broken and the result rolled. The chance drops 5% per 20 combined component levels, 2% per level of demonic or diabolical parts and 10% per level of corporeal undead parts, and rises 1% per alchemist level and 1% per two levels of one alchemically talented caster assisting.

It obeys its master unless the roll says otherwise. About 1-4% can breed, and First Age hybrids such as manticores and chimerae are thought to have been made this way. Like all homonculi it is immune to poisons, potions and magical influence and cannot be raised if killed.
