Colonies of Tharshesh

Place, Landmark

Tharshesh's five overseas colonies, set up in mostly uninhabited lands to exploit resources rather than to conquer peoples. Each is a grim, utilitarian walled fortress-city housing troops, administrators and laborers, supplied by the ships that collect its goods and seldom self-sufficient.

Also called The Colonies of Tharshesh

From the book

Tharshesh keeps five colonies abroad, chiefly as trade hubs and for exploiting useful resources. Unlike Hesperia's colonial lands, they are usually planted in empty territory, because the Tharshi want goods, not land, and have no interest in conquering or ruling foreigners.

Each colony is a big walled fortress-city holding the garrison, the administrators and the laborers who work the local resource. A few have small Tharshi civilian populations, but people live there only to make money and seldom by choice. The colonies are rarely self-sufficient: they are bleak, practical places built for efficiency rather than beauty, supplied by the same ships that come to carry off their goods, and their ports also serve as ports of call for passing traders.
