Mediterranea, painted for this archiveSaturnia
Place, Region
A southern peninsula of Mediterranea with few humans (like the Palasgeans) living mainly in the Eridanus valley, and a few Tharshi timber outposts. Its nymphs hate the Tharshi. The Vale of Avernus, source of the River Alphaeus, is said to lead to the underworld and Xanadu, and the nymphs guard cursed First Age Atlantean ruins on the west coast.
From the book
Saturnia is another peninsula reaching south from Mediterranea, with Targrim to the northwest, Otesium and Draconea to the north, and the Mediterranean Sea elsewhere; the colony of Taranta lies to its south. Its few humans look and live almost exactly like the Palasgeans and cluster mostly in the fertile Eridanus valley. Tharshesh keeps a few trading posts on its coasts to cut local timber and shelter ships trading with Yalak and Qaddan, but most of the peninsula remains untouched, the realm of nymphs and other Sidhe.
Saturnia's nymphs fiercely defend their woods against people. They hate and fear the Tharshi traders who ravage their forests and actively try to drive them and every other human intruder out, sparing only the Otesi, who are said to carry plenty of Sidhe blood themselves; relations with them are good, though contact is mostly between individuals.
Its most sacred site is the Vale of Avernus, where the River Alphaeus rises and plunges into the earth. Travelers also report early Atlantean ruins along the western shore. The nymphs warn that anyone who visits these ruined First Age cities will wake a terrible ancient curse, and they will do whatever they can to keep adventurers away from them.
