Mediterranea, painted for this archiveRaamah
Place, Island
A Sheban island whose seaport Aram is a crowded, intrigue-filled haven for traders, army and navy. The other three-quarters are reserved for High Citizens' estates but are mostly wilderness with bandits, griffons and the rare golden-red Sheban Lion, symbol of Sheba.
From the book
The island of Raamah has one major city, the seaport of Aram, a haven for Sheban merchant ships and a base for the realm's army and navy. Aram is small but packed with shops and taverns, and soldiers, merchants, citizens and foreigners mix there in a jumble of cultures, giving it a strong atmosphere of magic and intrigue. Ships are built and repaired here too.
Only a quarter of Raamah is given to the port and its defenses; the rest is reserved for Sheba's High Citizens, but only a few estates have been granted, and most of the island is wild and unvisited, a refuge for bandits and other shady characters, with griffons and other dangerous beasts in the interior. Most important is the nearly extinct Sheban Lion, a solitary animal smaller than the familiar veldt lion with a golden-red coat and mane. It is Sheba's official emblem, shown throughout its art and architecture; the Queen keeps trained ones in her palace and always travels with a pair, and they play a central part in many festival rituals through the year.
