An oasis village of Turan beside the sacred rock-cut cliff tombs of the sultans, caliphs and great heroes, whose ashes are kept in golden urns amid golden statues.

Madaan is one of Turan's oasis villages, a changing camp of brightly colored tents patterned with family designs. Beside it lies the holy burial place of every Turanian sultan, caliph and great hero, cut into solid rock in an imposing cliff and filled with golden statues and ornaments along its chambers and passages. When a revered leader or hero dies, the body is burned at a funeral, the ashes are gathered in a golden urn, and a pilgrimage to the tomb follows at once. Ordinary tribesmen get no urn; their ashes are strewn across the desert they wandered in life.
