With only a skim or a glance, the caster commits up to one page of writing per level of ability to memory. Even text the caster cannot read is held as a sharp mental picture that can be copied out at any time, and magical writings can be memorized this way too.
The memory keeps indefinitely, but it vanishes the moment the caster either writes it down or talks about what it says.

A scene
The sorcerer's grimoire lies open on a reading stand in the Tang University Complex for exactly as long as it takes the librarian to sneeze. Zhou Min, a mage of middling rank and excellent timing, glances across four pages of cramped, foreign script and closes his eyes. He cannot read a word of it, but the pages sit in his mind as sharp as a fresh print. On the walk home his friend asks what he saw. Zhou says nothing at all until he has ink, paper and a locked door.
