From the book

An aristocrat was brought up amid the finer and gentler side of civilization. Characters from this background can usually read and write and know the manners and customs of the upper class.

They add +40% to the roll for starting wealth and possessions, but may never learn Streetwise, Street Fighting or any Woodlore skill. Their contacts are aristocrats of every sort, clergy and artisans, with few or no friends among people of lower standing. Two background skills are chosen from Diplomacy/Protocol, Reading/Writing and up to two Additional Languages. In the Atlantean world likely birthplaces are Avalon, Atlantis, Khitai, Acheron and Tartessos.
