Divine Magic

Field of magic

Magic granted through faith in a religious doctrine, not learned as a scholarly study.

From the book

Divine Magic is less a course of study than the practice of a religious doctrine. Its casters draw their power from a patron deity and must hold to that deity's alignment; a priest who strays may find some spells working poorly or not at all, or be set a quest as penance. Priests are its main practitioners. Mages who take it as their second field are called magi and serve as astrologer-priests; savants of the divine branch pursue scholarship to glorify their god; and paladins, warrior-priests sworn to a deity's cause, are the only characters able to cast spells in armor. Charlatans may not dabble in it at all.

The spells suit a priest's role as healer and protector of the faithful. There are cures for disease, paralysis and insanity, spells that bless, purify, feed and give sanctuary, and circles, wards and shields against evil. Others lift curses, detect lies or reveal good and evil, and a sequence of four exorcisms drives out unwelcome spirits. At higher levels come the invocations that call on a deity's servants, a kind of summoning only this field can use, followed by minor and full miracles, the Holy Word, Omniscience and Retribution.

Black Magic and Divine Magic exclude each other: casters of either cannot pick up the other's spells through outside research.
