Magical mixtures and venoms can be prepared with a mortar and pestle, a small cauldron or crucible, and a steady heat source. The crucible also appears as one of the alchemist's written symbols, and the transmutation of 100 lb. of molten lead or mercury into gold with Variable Mercury, the Philosopher's Stone, requires a very large one.
