Fire is central to alchemical work. A laboratory furnace costs 300 G.P. (plus 10-100) to build and must cure for 1-4 weeks before lighting; after that its fire needs constant tending, usually by a young assistant, costs 100 G.P. a year to keep at the right heat, and has a 5% chance each month of going out, reduced by 1% for every assistant employed.
