Kawanna

Several hunter-gatherer tribes in southeastern Tamarac are known together as the Kawanna. They live in villages of thatched huts, usually behind high wooden stockades, and besides the game and plants of the forests they fish the waters to the south and paddle the Awa River in bark canoes. They are reclusive and dislike intruders, yet their jewelry of quartz, mica and seashells turns up all over Eria, which suggests they do trade with other tribes now and then.

Much like the Tamarac in many ways, they nonetheless rank themselves above the tribes to their north. Their warriors wear bear-claw necklaces and paint their faces black and white. Every man shaves his head except for a small central lock, never cut and adorned with feathers, bits of bone and tufts of deer hair, and they take scalps in battle, prizing scalp locks most of all. They fight with the same weapons as the Tamarac, have feuded with the Mound Builders for countless generations and sometimes raid their villages, and their shamans go into battle with them, using strong magic to hearten the Kawanna and terrify the foe.
