Werebat

Creature, Were-Creatures

The rarest lycanthrope: a nocturnal, fur-covered, winged humanoid that drinks the blood of sleepers with a painless bite and navigates by sonar. Cowardly in a fight, werebats attack only with superior numbers.

From the book

Werebats are the rarest lycanthropes, seldom seen in civilized lands or by day. All are humanoid, covered in a thick, coarse coat from gray to shining black, with claws on hands and feet for gripping and striking; fully spread, their wings can span more than twenty feet.

They lair in caves, ruins or thick woods, in groups of up to two dozen that include females and young, for unlike most lycanthropes werebats can breed. They rest through the day hanging upside down by their feet and go hunting at dusk. They can live on fruit if they must, but by nature they are blood-drinkers who prefer warm-blooded prey. Silent fliers, they steal up on sleeping or careless victims, and their numbing bite lets them feed without waking a sleeper.

Since the bite does little against a victim who fights back, in combat they strike with hand claws on the ground or foot claws in the air. Disliking combat, they rarely attack without superior numbers and flee a losing fight. Given the chance they carry victims off to their lairs, though as weak fliers it takes two or more to lift a man-sized captive, and tales, perhaps true, speak of captives kept alive for months as a living larder. A sonar sense lets them fly normally in magical darkness, detect living things up to 1,000 feet away and avoid nets, ropes and other obstacles, and because they depend on it, illusions of any kind do not affect them. Werebats fly, move without a sound 90% of the time, and, unlike other lycanthropes, are usually met in groups, most often of 2-20. A feeding werebat drains 1-4 points of blood each minute.
