Creature, The Undead
The mightiest of the dark undead: a featureless shadow in black robes, usually a being whose indomitable will refused death, often a former necromancer. Spectres radiate a 10-foot fear aura, drain life by touch or weapon, cast spells, and are harmed properly only by weapons forged against them.
From the book
Kvasir of Midgarth names the spectre the greatest of the dark undead, a black-robed shadow he titles both Prince of the Night and Lord of the Undead, whose arrival spells the end of life. It closely resembles a wraith, and the mightiest wraiths are spectres themselves, but while wraiths are made by necromancy, most true spectres were so fierce of will in life that they refused to die and stayed on, bodiless, in the world of men.
A spectre is a shadow with no shape beyond the robes it wears, and no face can be seen inside its cowl. It usually carries a scythe or a long, oddly carved staff. It gives off an aura of terror with a 10-foot radius by the chapter (20 feet by the appendix); those who fail a save vs WILL fall back and cannot attack. Like a wraith it drains life energy with a touch or a weapon. Only magic weapons made specifically against spectres or wraiths hurt it normally; ordinary weapons do nothing and silver does half damage. Magic has little effect, though a strong, determined caster can hold, turn or even banish one.
Worse, every spectre casts Black Magic at its own level, and some are mighty necromancers who gave up their bodies in exchange for this victory over death. Spectres are solitary, hate light and despise the living, roaming the dark on foot or astride a nightmare. Silver and running water repel them, and weaker ones cannot bear to look at holy symbols, but a spectre can overcome these aversions if the need is great. Some command wraiths and other bodiless undead. Most ignore mortal affairs, though a few keep their living aims. Its touch drains 3 points of energy per level, and like a wraith it sees invisible, ethereal and astral beings up to 1,000 feet away and senses the living within 20 feet.
