Ghost

Creature, The Undead

Restless spirits of people slain by violence, treachery or injustice, or who led evil lives, appearing as shrouded, near-transparent skeletons bound to a haunt. They can shift quickly between insubstantial and solid form, drain life by touch, and curse anyone whose name they learn.

From the book

Kvasir of Midgarth describes the ghost as the undead remnant of someone held to the earth by the wrongs of their life, a dreadful presence that died violently and seeks violence in turn, able to appear from beyond our plane to take a victim. Ghosts are spirits that cannot rest, usually because they were murdered, betrayed or wronged, or because an evil life keeps them from moving on. They often look like shrouded skeletons, insubstantial and almost see-through. In that state they pass through solid objects but can neither touch nor be touched.

A ghost can also gather enough substance to affect the world, and it switches between the two states so quickly that it dodges most attacks. Only silver or magic weapons, which can strike its insubstantial form, or the magic of an Exorcism can affect it. Holy symbols and certain spells can hold it in place, but other magic seldom works.

Most ghosts haunt a particular place, usually where they died; they cannot stay away long and can never cross running water. Some haunt a person instead, especially someone connected with their death, and in rare cases one invades a victim's dreams every night so they never rest. A ghost attacks by touch, absorbing its victim's life essence, and once a day it can lay a curse on anyone whose name it learns.

Its touch drains 2 points of energy per level. Ghosts fly, sense invisible, ethereal and astral beings within 100 feet, and can often be driven off the material plane by Exorcism. A ghost keeps the level it had in life but is always turned as 11th level.
