Roane

Creature, The Sidhe

Shy, otter-like aquatic Sidhe of ponds, streams and marshes, with oversized eyes, who spy on everything around them and trade information only for news, gossip or a song. Gentle vegetarians hunted for their valuable fur, they are wary of strangers and use minor enchantments to escape capture.

From the book

Roane are water-dwelling Sidhe of ponds, streams and marshes. They look much like otters, though with bigger eyes, and swim so well that catching one in the water is nearly impossible. They can live on land as long as they need to, but become uneasy once their fur starts to dry, so only something truly out of the ordinary will draw one from its watery home.

Like most Sidhe they are timid and keep to themselves, yet they are endlessly nosy, quietly watching everything that happens nearby and enjoying a chat with other Sidhe, above all nymphs, sprites and rabican. As a result a Roane usually knows nearly everything going on in its territory. Handled carefully, one may even talk with certain humans, such as Druids, Shamans and Beastmasters. It trades what it knows only for fresh news, gossip or sometimes a song; money means nothing underwater and Roane never drink, so coin and liquor will not buy them.

Roane are gentle and would never hurt another creature, living on a sparse diet of shoots and buds. Because their fine pelts can fetch 1,000 gold pieces or more in some places, they are wary of strangers, and most know a little Enchantment magic to escape anyone trying to catch them. Usually only one is seen in a given area, though pairs and families of young have been reported. A Roane can cast any 1st level Enchantment spell, always at 1st level of ability, and a few know spells of 2nd or 3rd level. While it is in the water, attackers suffer -3 to hit it.
