Nymphs

Creature, The Sidhe

The best-known Sidhe: slender, beautiful beings whose name properly covers all female Sidhe rather than a separate race. They fall into five groups (dryads, hyads, naiads, nereids, oreads), each tied to a different realm, all very attractive to humans.

Also called Nymph

From the book

Nymphs are the most familiar of the Sidhe: slim, graceful and remarkably beautiful. Strictly speaking the word covers every female Sidhe, so treating nymphs as a separate race, as people often do, is a mistake. They are usually sorted into five groups by the places they live: dryads of the forests, hyads of the clouds, naiads of lakes and rivers, nereids of the deep sea, and oreads of the mountains. All are lightly built and hold a strong attraction for humans.

In play a nymph stands 4 1/2-5 feet tall and has 4 hit points per level. Every nymph casts spells of 1st-5th level: dryads use the Elemental magic of trees and plants, hyads that of air and wind, naiads and nereids that of water, and oreads the magic of woodlore, such as finding plants or animals, speaking with animals, foretelling weather and hiding trails. Each group also has a special gift: dryads slip through plants, hyads fly, naiads and nereids breathe water, and oreads track at 95%. Only oreads normally fight, using weapons. Most never rise past 8th level, but a few can keep advancing without limit, just as human characters do.

Kullervo the Wanderer described meeting an oread band in The Travels. Plainly dressed in loose tunics that shifted color to match rock or meadow, and armed with spears and a few bows, they led his party through a moonless night at a punishing pace, then melted into the shadows of a narrow gorge as their leader warned the travelers never to return.

Appendix block (p. 98) is headed NYMPH and prints 'Dryads' twice; the second line (wind and air) must mean Hyads. Appendix spellings Oriads/Naids differ from the text's oreads/naiads.
