Creates a sphere of magical darkness, from 1 inch up to 20 ft. across, in which mundane light sources fail; any light spell dispels it.

Conjures a ball of total darkness, which the caster may size anywhere from 1 inch to 20 ft. across. Torches, lamps and other ordinary lights will not work inside it, but any spell of light cancels it on the spot. It lasts 1 hour per level of ability.

A scene
The harbor watch at Tartessos keeps a brazier burning on the breakwater, and tonight that is a problem. Hiram, an astrologer with debts to pay, crouches in a skiff below the rocks and shapes a sphere of perfect darkness around the fire, twenty feet across. The flames still crackle, but inside the black ball they give no light at all. The guard fumbles for a torch; it is as useless as the brazier. Three low boats slide past into the inner harbor, and the darkness will hold for hours yet.
