An invisible aura of magical energy surrounds the caster and soaks up half the damage from any kind of attack, whatever its source. It lasts 1 minute for each level of ability, so the spell is Variable as described, and there is no save.

A scene
The manticore came down on the wizard out of the Daraka rocks, lashing its tail and sending a storm of spikes at him. Sabah had already spoken the word. The spikes struck him and hurt, some of them badly, but a shimmer of force around him swallowed half of every blow. When the beast pounced, its claws tore through his cloak and into his arm, and still the wound was only half of what it should have been. He staggered, kept his feet, and began to chant the next spell. He had only a few minutes of protection left.
