Philtres
Skill, Magical/Alchemical
Brewing wine-based philtres that force an emotion or reaction on whoever drinks them; requires Read Magic. 2,000 XP.
From the book
Philtres are wine-based drinks that force a particular feeling or reaction on whoever swallows them. Each needs a pint of wine, a mortar and pestle and a fire, and takes d4+4 hours to brew, succeeding 90% of the time plus 1% per level, up to 99%. They usually cost about 100 GP. Learning the skill from a tutor costs 2,000 XP and requires Read Magic.
Their menace lies in disguise: a philtre is nearly impossible to tell from ordinary wine, and even a drinker who questions it must save vs Intelligence at -4 to notice. Once drunk, the effect is instant and allows no save, normally lasting 5-20 minutes. Recipes produce apathy, compliance with any reasonable suggestion, curiosity, friendship, mirth, sorrow, reckless fearlessness, stubborn refusal, and a ravenous hunger that sends the victim after any food in sight. Several are tied to a name: the victim falls in love with, turns fiercely loyal to, attacks, or betrays whoever is named first in his or her hearing. The love philtre lasts until a spell or antidote ends it, and treachery has no time limit; the victim betrays the named person at the first opportunity, in a manner the Game Judge decides.
