Magic staves, rods and wands (general rules)
Rule, Magic items
Staves, rods and wands are multi-charge spell-storing devices built on the same principles as Minor Magic Items; they take long to enchant but hold many spells.
From the book
Staves, rods and wands store spells on the same principle as Minor Magic Items. They are slow to enchant but prized for the many stored spells, or charges, they hold: up to 21 in a staff, 36 in a rod and 50 in a wand. Materials are as for a Minor Magic Item, plus 2,000 G.P. for a rod or 5,000 G.P. for a wand. Enchanting takes a month plus a day per charge, at about 12 unbroken hours a day, and succeeds 99% of the time.
Staves are usually wooden, 5-7 ft. long and 1-1/2 to 2 inches thick, carved with symbols by primitive casters or fitted with metal bands and heads by civilized ones. Rods are metal or wood, 2-3 ft. long, about an inch thick and rarely ornamented. Wands are metal or bone, 1/4 to 1-1/2 ft. long and about half an inch thick, usually tipped with gems or precious metal, or carved bone among primitive casters. Staves and rods can be given +1-3 to hit; wands cannot be used to strike.
Such devices sell for at least twice their materials plus 1,000 G.P. per week of enchanting and 500 G.P. per storable spell. All can be recharged, but no caster may make or use one holding spells restricted to another profession.
