Sala

Sala is a loose confederation of tribes governed by their elders. The nominal capital is the large village of Vishaka, near several mines that produce various kinds of precious stones. Little villages of thatched huts are scattered along the southern parts of both coasts and across the interior grasslands, but no Salan lives in the north, whose jungles are said to be haunted by terrible creatures.

Salans are short, with looks and coloring like the Meluhhans. Most farm and herd inland or fish and hunt on the coasts. They trade gems to Meluhha for copper and brass goods, knowing almost nothing of metalworking themselves, but otherwise keep to themselves and are thought shy, even secretive. Their religion is little known and probably shamanistic; travelers describe carved wooden figures often over ten feet tall, which some say show serpents coiled in strange poses and others say represent forces of nature.
