Isle of Demons

Place, Island

A dread island off western Anostos whose waters seethe and from which inhuman shrieks carry up to 12 miles at night; it swarms with hundreds of Hantu, earth-bound demons that fight among themselves. Stranded Hantu will serve a powerful caster for a way home, so some magicians visit.

Also called Isle of Daemons

From the book

Off the west coast of Anostos lies the dreaded Isle of Demons. If frightened sailors are to be believed, the sea around it boils and churns as if stirred by invisible forces, and at evening dreadful, inhuman screams ring from the island, sometimes audible as far as 12 miles off.

For all its mysteries, the island's inhabitants are well known to students of the arcane: the Hantu, an evil race often called earth-bound demons. The great First Age sorcerer Korak writes of both the Hantu and the island in his famous Guide to the Lower Planes. The isle may hold hundreds of Hantu of differing strength, and being savage by nature they threaten each other as much as the island's animals; their fierce battles are said to cause the terrible shrieks. Because Hantu hate being trapped on the material plane, some will bargain their service to a mighty spellcaster in return for any device or spell that can send them home, though such a pact seldom runs past one month for each level the caster has. That is why some magicians occasionally visit the island.
