City of Atlantis

The round city of Atlantis measures 32,000 feet across and ranks among the marvels of the Second Age. It copies the plan of the First Age capital that sank in the Cataclysm, and its layout blends practical and artistic design with great skill. Ships reach it by canal, while travelers on land arrive by the Atlas road, the Gadirus road or the spiral road, all flagged with stone.

Every major building is made of finely cut stone blocks. Following First Age custom, the ring walls and some key government buildings are sheathed in metal: brass on the outer wall, tin on the second, and copper and orichalc on the innermost. They gleam in daylight and shimmer even under moon and stars.

Life in the city is generally very good. Citizens may do as they like provided they obey the law, and the usual urban ills of crowding, poverty, crime and poor sanitation are absent or barely noticeable. The well-drilled sentries handle would-be troublemakers politely but firmly. As a hub of trade, the city welcomes foreigners who behave with proper decorum. It is divided into four main areas: the Zones of Water, the Major Zone of Land, the Lesser Zone of Land and the Inner Island.
