Antilla

Place, Region

A vast undersea plateau averaging some 20 feet below the surface, with barely 5% above water, rising from the ocean floor on cliffs of 12,000 to 18,000 feet. Giant sea plants, some magical or healing, choke its waters and make it nearly impassable to ships, which has helped keep Eria isolated; its islets are sacred Triton spawning grounds guarded on pain of death, apart from a few set aside for human traders.

From the book

Antilla is among the strangest regions of the Atlantean world. People speak of the Land of Antilla, but barely five percent of it stands above the sea; the rest is a vast undersea plateau lying on average about 20 feet down, perhaps once a true island continent, home to aquatic plants and animals including the water-breathing Tritons. Its sides fall away in immense cliffs: some 12,000 feet on the Atlantean east, up to 18,000 feet on the west, far beyond sun or moonlight, averaging over 15,000 feet.

The cliffs and plateau teem with life, from tiny fish to great leviathans. Countless sea plants form underwater jungles on the plateau top; some have strong magical or healing virtues prized by men and Tritons, and many are edible, feeding the Tritons and sheltering the creatures they hunt. Some grow twenty or thirty feet above the waves, and a grove of them can look convincingly like land; a person can walk on these living rafts, but only the nimble avoid falling through the gaps or tipping whole sections over. This growth, and the dense weed below, makes the plateau almost impassable to anything but the smallest boats, and these alien waters, with the Sargasso beside them, are a chief reason Eria has stayed nearly untouched by Atlantis.

Antilla is split among three Great Tribes of Tritons: Sahuga, Neptus and Sargo. Its few islands are hilltops rising from the plateau. Those in the center, rounded, misty, muddy mounds, are sacred spawning grounds, while jagged pinnacles veined with gems sometimes serve as council towers; trespassers on sacred isles face an ancient penalty of death. Islands on the rim are not sacred, and a few are set aside for visiting human traders.
