Three-story stone towers stand at each end of the bridges over the city's three ring canals. Each has an iron gate plated with orichalc and a garrison of twenty sentries and twenty archers. Everyone passing pays a toll of 1 silver piece, and the guards may refuse entry to anyone who looks disreputable.
