Dragons were the first creatures of the world, born at its fiery core. They ruled land, sea and sky until the ice age drove the survivors underground or beneath the sea to sleep and wait.

The chapter on dragonkind opens with the words of Solmeht the Chronicler. By his account the dragons were the earliest beings on earth, huge reptiles born deep in the heart of the world. They climbed out of their burning underground homes and claimed land, sea and sky alike, and for untold ages they were masters of everything.
Then the ice came. Many dragons died, and the rest escaped by retreating once more beneath the earth or under the sea. There, hidden and safe, they fell asleep, dreaming of the day they would rise and walk the world again.
The chapter goes on to describe the hydra and its winged cousin the ouranabad, the wyvern, the firedrake, the sea dragon, the Eastern dragon, the great dragon and the wyrmm, its larval young.
