Devils

Devils dwell in Hades, the nine hells, and unlike demons they are lawful, loyally keeping to the chain of command called the Order of Ascendancy under Asmodeus. Summoners must be firm with them; devils will usually help those of like alignment and purpose but hate serving anyone they judge incompetent, or worse, friendly with demons. Devils and demons despise each other and fight on sight, and every devil dreads the power of good and cannot abide holy symbols or relics of divine magic. Asmodeus, their sinister and complex ruler, is said to have lived among the gods with the arch devils until they were cast out for plotting to seize the heavens.

Cast down to Hades, Asmodeus now schemes to win a high place in the world of men; next to brutal Mephistopheles he is subtle, and some even credit him with a sense of humor. On their home planes devils and demons are said to war without end, each trying to steal the other's power. A flaw in the protective circle or triangle frees a devil to enslave or kill its summoner, and ordering more than its rank owes breaks the pact at once.
