Wooden/animal hide shield

Equipment, Shield

A cheap wood or hide shield. Shields prevent undefended attacks from the shielded flank, add +2 to parry rolls, and can bash for 1-6.

From the book

The cheapest shield, at 5 S.P. For saving throws, all but the very best wooden or hide shields count as inferior goods, which halves their saves when a parry goes badly.

Any shield protects the bearer's shielded flank from undefended attacks, adds +2 to the die when parrying, and can be used to ram a foe for 1-6 bludgeoning damage at +2 to hit, with a knockdown possible by accepting the non-proficiency penalty. A shield bearer caught in an Ice Storm can deflect half the damage with a save vs Dexterity.
