Hantu

Place, People

Brutish earth-bound demons of unknown origin with no fixed form (claws, wings, scales, extra limbs and so on), perhaps twelve species, that slip into the world through gates and rifts and often cannot return. They cannot be summoned, hide by day in swamps, forests and mountains, and hunt by night.

From the book

Korak's Guide to the Lower Planes describes the Hantu, which the demonologist Ahriman classes as 999: black, as hideous, brutish creatures of unknown origin. Unlike most demons they share no single body form; any one may have a range of repulsive features such as cloven hooves, claws, forked tongues, bat wings, shaggy hides, scales or extra arms or legs. Ahriman claims there may be as many as twelve species, which may well be true.

In the mortal world they gather in numbers only on the Isle of Demons west of Anostos. There, as elsewhere, they shelter in swamps, dense forests and mountains, lying idle by day and emerging each night to hunt. Since they do not come from the usual home planes of demons, no spell can summon them; instead they find their way to the mortal world by spotting magical gates and rifts between planes and slipping through on their own. For some reason, those who arrive this way often cannot get back to their own world.
