Satyr

Creature, The Sylvan Races

Goat-legged, horned woodland men, simple and hedonistic, living on berries and loving wine and their syrinx pipes. Usually harmless, but drunken bands may raid remote farms to carry off women; some locals treat them as forest deities and leave wine offerings. Female satyrs exist but are rarely seen.

From the book

Satyrs are a wild, primitive woodland people best known for their lechery and rowdiness. They have a man's head, arms and chest, but goat legs covered in matted fur and ending in sharp hooves, along with goat ears and horns. Shunning civilization for a simple life of merriment, they eat berries and other plants, love wine (and gain +2 on saves against any intoxicant), dwell in the open or in small caves, and make little beyond their famous syrinx pipes. The pipes give off a magical aura and are believed to hold magical or alchemical virtues, yet for some reason only a satyr can use them to charm people and animals.

They are fairly bright but have little self-control and are ruled by their urges. Mostly they are harmless, yet drunk satyrs turn violent and destructive, and bands sometimes storm isolated farms and villages in a drunken frenzy, chiefly to carry off women, since they desire females of nearly any humanoid race. When charm fails they may turn to force, with unhappy results.

Chiron's Natural History, which says little of their dealings with men, describes a forest band whom local people revered as guardian spirits of the woods. No one dared disturb their afternoon sleep for fear of turning them against the folk beyond the forest, and villagers regularly left wine as offerings, which the satyrs gladly took. Such dread seems odd, but crafty satyrs skilled in woodlore could trouble their neighbors. Female satyrs certainly exist, despite claims to the contrary; they are rarely seen, likely even shyer than the males, and are thought to avoid the males' drinking and wildness and keep clear of men.
