The Goblin Races, painted for this archiveMountain Troll
Creature, The Goblin Races
A larger, duller cousin of the rock troll, eight feet or more, nearly identical in looks, living alone in caves with little sense even of family. Tireless and prodigiously strong, it can hurl boulders like a light catapult or fling a man twenty feet, so rock trolls and goblins use them as living artillery.
From the book
Mountain trolls are close kin of rock trolls and look almost exactly like them, only bigger and bulkier, usually eight feet tall or more. They are far duller and cruder than their smaller cousins, seldom carrying more than a rough club and often fighting with hands, claws and teeth. They barely grasp any bond beyond family, and often ignore even that, so most live alone in caves or in a seized hovel, building nothing themselves. Rock troll clans and goblin tribes sometimes adopt a few, directing their strength with better brains.
They never tire and are immensely strong. A mountain troll can throw rocks with the force of a light catapult, so rock trolls use them as living artillery in sieges, and it can snatch up a man-sized foe in one hand and fling him up to twenty feet. They have infra-vision but see badly in any light, which pains their eyes. A hurled boulder carries 10 feet for each point of the troll's STR and deals 6-36 damage, and a man-sized victim thrown by one takes 3-24. Mountain trolls are sometimes found living among rock trolls, and a few, all of them warriors, rise above 8th level.
Kullervo the Wanderer admitted that his only meeting with one, while helping dwarves in a cavern battle, shook him more than anything else he ever faced. The reeking troll, nearly eight feet tall and close to a thousand pounds, hurled one of his companions against the rock wall, breaking his back, crushed the life out of the other despite his desperate slashes, and then came for Kullervo, who chose to flee as fast as he could.
