Irin

Creature, Spirit Entities

Known as "the watchers", the ten Irin are gigantic spirit beings as powerful as demi-gods, banished to a plane between heaven and earth for seeking the gods' secrets and made to observe and record events on the prime material plane. They can take the shape of any living creature and are mighty spell casters, and a summoned Irin answers one question or perhaps grants a wish before departing.

From the book

The Irin, called the watchers, are spirit beings as mighty as demi-gods, arch-demons and arch-devils. They once lived in the heavens, but long ago the gods cast them down to a lower plane, said to lie halfway between heaven and earth, for trying to learn divine secrets. As their punishment they must watch and record everything that happens on the prime material plane, which is how they got their name.

They are giants of striking appearance, and each can turn at will into any living creature, from a mosquito to a great dragon or leviathan. They are also formidable spell casters, but they are forbidden to meddle actively in the affairs of other beings. Attacked, an Irin defends itself with magic and uses physical force only when it has no choice. An Irin has Celestial Vision at will, knows when anyone within 100 feet lies, and can teleport or cross dimensions whenever it likes. It casts spells and turns undead, demons and devils as a 24th level priest or mystic. Fire, cold, lightning, fear, curses and control spells cannot affect it, and its touch deals 3-24 energy damage.

There are ten Irin, each with its own area of responsibility and knowledge. Those who practice Divine Magic, High Magic or Mysticism can summon one to answer a single question in its field, and it then returns at once to its home plane. An Irin always tells the truth, never answers outside its own field, and though none has ever lied, they sometimes reply in riddles or cryptic terms when the mood takes them.

Instead of a question, a summoner may ask for a wish. Because the Irin may not interfere themselves, they can only carry the request to the summoner's own deity. If the summoner has kept faith with that patron, the wish is certain to be granted; otherwise the god may be angered and punish or endanger the faithless summoner.

Ten Irin are known, each summonable through Divine Magic, High Magic or Mysticism; a summoned Irin may be asked one question within its own field of knowledge, or instead to grant a wish; since Irin may not meddle in other beings' affairs, they can only carry the request to the summoner's deity, which will surely grant it if the summoner has kept faith with that Patron Deity, but may punish or endanger one who has not
