Devils, painted for this archiveGargoyle
Creature, Devils
The strongest lesser devils, spiny 'Barbed Devils' who guard the gates and roads into Hades. They cannot be surprised, raise alarms on gongs, and fight with talons while hovering, though they fly poorly and prefer to ram airborne foes.
Also called Barbed Devil
From the book
Gargoyles are the mightiest of the lesser devils and stand watch over the many gates and roads that lead into Hades. They usually appear in groups of two to twelve, with a 25% chance of an alastor among them as adviser. With or without one, they are superb sentries who can never be surprised; when they spot an intruder they raise the alarm, usually on great gongs, and go straight to investigate.
In a fight they tear with sharp talons, each capable of a vicious wound, and if there is room they hover above a foe so they can use the claws on both hands and feet. They can easily carry twice their own weight in the air, but they fly badly, with little speed or agility, so they usually try to ram flying enemies and force them to the ground. Its tough, barbed hide lets a gargoyle ram a foe for 2-16 damage without being hurt itself, provided it gets at least 10 feet of running or flying start, and any unarmored creature that wrestles with one takes 1-3 damage a round from the barbs. Gargoyles cannot be turned to stone.
They are hideous, bristling with spines and barbs, especially on the head, hands, feet and back, which is why they are also called Barbed Devils; grabbing or grappling one without being cut and scraped is nearly impossible. A summoned gargoyle can be ordered to stand guard, for no more than a day, or to protect someone, for no more than an hour. It cannot be told to give chase or to go more than a hundred feet from where it was called unless its summoner goes with it.
