Bat Horin

Creature, Devils

The foulest lesser devils, living shadows with glowing red eyes who spy on other devils for their greater masters and lurk near graves to snare the souls of the newly dead. Their claws cause blood-poisoning, and bright light weakens them.

From the book

Bat Horin are the vilest of the lesser devils and are found all through Hades. There they act as spies and informers, keeping an eye on the masses of devils below them and reporting anything suspicious or rebellious to their masters, the greater devils. Now and then an Arch Devil dispatches one to the prime material plane to collect information or to trap the spirits of newly dead humans, and for that they often lurk in the shadows of graveyards, barrows and ruins.

They fight with clawed hands that together deal heavy damage, and their wounds almost always cause blood poisoning, usually fatal unless cured within seven hours (the appendix instead gives claws and bite a 75% chance of passing on a blood disease that often kills within 48 hours if left untreated). The sickness brings attacks of weakness or dizziness lasting 2-12 minutes, which grow worse as it takes hold. Whenever a claw strikes home, a Bat Horin always follows with a bite. They look like shadows made solid; although their eyes glow an eerie red, they are nearly invisible in darkness or shade. Bright light weakens them badly, imposing -2 on their attacks and saves, so they never go out in daylight and avoid well-lit places. Wherever they are met, there is a 50% chance one or two grimalkin are with them. Bat Horin fly, go unnoticed in darkness 95% of the time, and once a day can put three questions to the dead.

A spell caster can summon one to spy on anyone living on the prime material plane; given careful instructions, it will do its best to learn what is wanted and come back quickly. It cannot be called by day, will serve no longer than twenty-four hours, and cannot be ordered to fight except against demons or beings of the outer planes.
