'Pit Devils', the largest greater devils, guard and serve the Arch Devils and oversee Asmodeus' slave pits and mines, delighting in tormenting the damned. They wield will-draining whips, claws and a constricting tail; a few have feeble wings.

The Asura, or Pit Devils, are the biggest greater devils and live in the lowest planes of Hades. These giants guard and wait upon the Arch Devils and act as overseers in Asmodeus' slave pits and mines, which gives them their nickname. They are extremely cruel and love tormenting the miserable souls condemned to toil in those infamous hellholes.
In a fight an Asura uses a terrible whip that deals grievous wounds and gradually drains its victim's will to resist, or else it tears at a foe with its claws, each able to do fearful harm. The whip is magical: each hit drains 1-2 points of WILL, and anyone brought to WILL 3 or less becomes the Asura's slave, unable to recover without magical help, while lesser losses return at a point an hour. An Asura can also sense invisible and ethereal beings within 20 feet. Its tail can also coil around a victim and crush it. A few Asura have wings, but they fly wretchedly, their bat-like wings barely lifting their huge bodies; one can manage no more than a hundred feet before landing and launching itself again. In this clumsy way it can carry up to five hundred pounds, but it can hardly steer at all.
A summoned Asura can be set to supervise up to a hundred slave laborers for as long as a week. It will perform other services too, but for no more than an hour before returning home.
