Everyone close to the caster must resist or be stunned for several minutes.

From the book
The caster speaks the word, and every person or creature within 20 ft. has to make a save vs Constitution; anyone who fails is left stunned for 2-8 minutes. The spell is Non-variable, so the stun's length does not depend on the caster's level.

A scene
The Leopard Men burst out of the jungle around the wizard Kojo with claws strapped to their hands and masks over their faces, six of them, snarling. He spoke the word. It struck the air like a thunderclap without sound, and five of the killers dropped where they stood, reeling, eyes rolling, unable to lift their claws. The sixth shook his head, staggered, and came on. Kojo met him with his staff. He had only a few minutes before the others shook off the stunning blow, and he meant to be gone by then.
