A scene
The witch who cursed the village of Iber with the spotted wasting sickness is long gone, and the child on the mat is very close to following her mother into the ground. The monk Sancho kneels and lays both hands on the girl's burning forehead. He breathes slowly, pouring his ki into her, and the red spots begin to fade like ink washing from a page. By evening the fever has broken. By the next morning she is sitting up and asking for bread, and the whole village comes to see the miracle.
