The demon ward stops demons from physically entering or crossing the area it covers. Several other wards (against devils, elementals, spirits and undead) work the same way for their own kinds of creature.
Like all Symbols of Warding, it is traced by hand, wand or staff, forms an invisible barrier up to 20 ft. in radius, stays where it was drawn, and lasts until removed by a counter-symbol or a counter-spell (50% per try).
