Alchemical shorthand sign standing for variable; the book offers these as optional flavor or as substitutes for written abbreviations.

The alchemical sign for the quality "variable," the opposite of "fixed." Both terms appear in the names of essences such as Variable Mercury and True (Fixed) Lead.
The alchemical signs are included as optional color, and a player or Game Judge may write them in place of ordinary abbreviations whenever he or she likes.
