The athanor is the alchemists' philosophical furnace, the second essential piece of apparatus for the most advanced substances. It is made much like the aludel, but calls for 100 carats of powdered quartz, and isolating enough Rare Earths takes a full month. Once shaped, it has to be kept burning for another full month to cure before it can be used.
Advanced alchemical equipment requires a fully equipped laboratory and succeeds 99% of the time. Because every alchemist's practice is so personal, anyone attempting high level operations must build his or her own aludel and athanor; these are seldom bought or sold, and a purchased or acquired one is useless for high level work.
