The aludel is the alchemists' philosophical vase, and without it the most advanced alchemical substances cannot be made. The alchemist first spends two full weeks isolating a large amount of Rare Earths, then adds 7 fl. oz. of clear water and 12 carats of powdered quartz, working the lot into a paste like clay. From this paste a sealable urn or vase about 12 inches high is shaped and then fired for two weeks, after which it is ready to use.
Advanced alchemical equipment requires a fully equipped laboratory and succeeds 99% of the time. Because every alchemist's practice is so personal, anyone attempting high level operations must build his or her own aludel and athanor; these are seldom bought or sold, and a purchased or acquired one is useless for high level work.
