A land of western jungle and eastern coast-like country divided by rivers and lakes, carved up among the dreaded Afiti, ghoulish undead shamans who prey on the living; the mightiest, the Master, lives beneath Okioga Lake and is paid in human victims. Only the superstitious Acholi of the Achwa district remain, forbidden by taboo to use anything they did not make or obtain themselves.

Only the western half of Samu really belongs to Gondwana's jungle interior; past the line of lakes and rivers splitting the country, the east takes on the look and climate of the east coast. Nubia lies north, Massawa east, Magan south and the vague edge of Awalawa west. Life of every sort teems here, yet just one human tribe lives in or even enters the region.
The reason is the Afiti, ghoulish undead shamans who have split the land among themselves and feed on the living both in Samu and across its borders; their power is great and much feared. The strongest, who calls himself the Master, dwells under Okioga Lake and judges the rare quarrels of lesser Afiti in exchange for human victims. Despite this, the Acholi of the Achwa district stay on, bound to their hunting grounds by faith and fear of disaster should they leave.
