Northwestern Khitan province known for the grain city of Ts'in and wealthy Chu Tang with its iron, copper, gold and jade mines, near the Gorges of Chu Tang and bottomless Baykal Lake. Its northern forests yield ginseng despite ogres and wild mountain folk, and the outpost of Tai Yen on the Hwang River guards against Tammans.

Hwang province is best known for its two cities. Ts'in is a farming center that supplies a large share of the empire's wheat, millet and rice, while larger, richer Chu Tang mines iron, copper, gold and jade. The deep Gorges of Chu Tang lie west of it and Baykal Lake, said to have no bottom, lies north.
Farther north and northwest stretch great forests and mountains. Spice traders come for precious ginseng root despite the ogre tribes and wild mountain people, and Mandarins from the south sometimes hunt pheasant and wildcat there, and snow leopard in the peaks. The small outpost of Tai Yen on the Hwang River keeps hostile Tammans from coming downstream.
