From the book

Historians and geographers call Gondwana the Dark Continent, a name taken from its wild interior, where impassable jungles and towering peaks hide sights no man has seen. That is only one face of the land, though: advanced civilizations thrive along its coasts, and its peoples and cultures are strikingly varied.

The continent falls into four broad regions, each with its own terrain, climate, wildlife and hazards. The tropical Interior is untamed jungle that in places runs right to the western shore along the great river basins, thinly peopled and full of predators. Around the Sahara Sea in the north lie the warm, fertile Saharan lands, best typified by lush, garden-like Hesperia. The east coast is game-rich savannah that blends into the Southlands, which are cooler, drier and rougher and home to several large, sophisticated civilizations.

In the heart of the continent a few giant reptiles and mammals from the dawn of time survive beside elephants, rhinoceros, lions, gorillas, wildebeest, unicorns and dragons. The Interior and Southlands are renowned for precious metals, above all gold and diamonds, while the mineral-poor east lives off its vast grazing lands.

Humans of every shade are the most numerous people, darker in the east and south and lighter in the north. A few elves reportedly live on the Dabban peninsula, Punt has a large dwarf population, and the beast-men of the Andaman tribes are common in the interior. Goblins, Sidhe such as Sprites and Bakru, satyrs, intelligent beasts, night spirits, and earth-bound demons that prefer lonely jungles and mountaintops round out the list.
