Reads one being's thoughts or feelings undetected, or tries to pry out one specific secret, which the subject may notice and resist; it cannot uncover true names.

The caster reads the thoughts or emotions, or both, of one individual or creature, at a range of 10 ft. per level for 1 minute. Simple reading gives the subject no save and leaves him unaware.
The caster may instead dig for one particular secret or piece of knowledge the subject holds, such as the ingredients of a potion, a spell, or the subject's greatest weakness. That deeper probe alerts the subject to the caster's intent and lets him resist; if he does not, he stays unaware and the caster gains what he sought. The spell can never reveal a true name.

A scene
The Serpent Cult priest captured in Tharshesh will not say where the hostages are held, no matter how often the guards shout. The mystic Maren sits down across from him, pale and quiet, and slips into his mind. For a moment his thoughts are all rage and fear and prayers. Then she reaches past them for the one thing she needs, and the priest does not even notice. A cellar under a potter's shop, near the harbor. Maren stands, nods to the captain of the guard and walks out without a word.
