The Beginning Spell Caster

New casters have finished a long apprenticeship, can read magical script, and know every first level spell available to their profession; higher spells must be found.

Every first level caster, whatever the profession, is assumed to have already served an apprenticeship of 4-7 years under an experienced master. That training leaves the new adept able to read magical script of every kind, a learned skill that is essential to any study of magic. When the writing in question is especially old or obscure, the Game Judge may call for a save vs Intelligence before the caster can make sense of it.
The apprentice has also been taught every first level spell that members of the profession can use. Nothing higher has been taught, so spells of second level and above have to be tracked down or otherwise obtained as the caster rises in level of ability.
